Care Matters

Gentle before and after care tips to keep your semi-permanent makeup flawless and fresh.

In the 48 hours before your appointment
  • Avoid alcohol, it thins the blood and can increase bleeding, which affects pigment uptake

  • Skip caffeine on the day, it can make skin more sensitive and cause unnecessary discomfort

  • Don't wax, tint, or thread the treatment area for at least 48 hours beforehand

  • Stay out of the sun and avoid sunbeds, sunburned or sun-damaged skin cannot be treated

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen unless prescribed by your doctor

On the day of your appointment

Arrive with clean skin. Please come with no makeup on the treatment area. If you wear makeup elsewhere, that's absolutely fine.

Eat a light meal beforehand. Your blood sugar should be stable, don't come on an empty stomach.

Wear comfortable clothing. You'll be lying down for up to 2 hours, so dress for comfort.

Leave the filters at home. If you've been inspired by a look online, bring reference photos to your consultation, real, unfiltered images tend to give the most realistic guide.

Certain medical conditions, medications, or skin types may mean SPMU isn't suitable for you right now. We'll always discuss this during your consultation, and we'd rather reschedule than rush into a treatment that isn't right for your skin.

Pre-Treatment Preparation

A little preparation goes a long way. Follow these simple steps before your appointment to protect your skin, get the best possible results, and ensure your treatment goes smoothly.

In the weeks before your appointment

Avoid retinol and AHAs/BHAs
Stop using any skincare containing retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or vitamin C around the treatment area at least 4 weeks before. These thin the skin and can affect how pigment is retained.

No Botox near the treatment area
If you're having brows treated, avoid Botox in the forehead for a minimum of 3 weeks before, and wait 4 weeks after your treatment before scheduling your next appointment.

Pause any facial treatments
Microneedling, chemical peels, and laser treatments should be avoided for at least 4 weeks prior to your SPMU appointment.

Aftercare Guide

Your results depend just as much on how you care for your skin after treatment as on the treatment itself. Follow these steps carefully to protect your investment and ensure beautiful, long-lasting results.

The first 24 hours

This is the most critical window. Your skin has been through a process, treat it gently.

  • Blot gently, don't wipe. Use a clean cotton pad to lightly blot the treated area every hour for the first 4–6 hours. This removes any lymph fluid and prevents heavy scabbing.

  • Keep it dry. Avoid water, sweat, and steam on the treated area. No washing your face directly over it.

  • No touching. Keep fingers away from the area, bacteria from your hands can cause infection and affect healing.

  • Skip the makeup. Do not apply any makeup, skincare, or SPF to the treated area.

Days 2–7: The healing phase

Some flaking, darkening, and tenderness is completely normal, this is your skin healing, not something going wrong.

Do:

  • Apply the aftercare balm provided in thin layers, 2–3 times a day

  • Keep the area as dry as possible

  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase

Don't:

  • Pick or peel any flaking skin, this pulls pigment out and can cause scarring

  • Exercise heavily or use saunas, steam rooms, or hot tubs

  • Apply any active skincare (retinol, acids, vitamin C) near the area

  • Expose the area to direct sunlight

Weeks 2–6: Long-term care

Once the surface has healed, protecting your results becomes the priority.

Sun protection is essential. UV exposure is the number one cause of pigment fading. Once fully healed, always apply SPF 50 to the treated area before going outdoors.

Avoid prolonged water exposure. Swimming in pools, the sea, or long hot showers can fade results over time.

Hold off on facials and skin treatments. Wait a minimum of 4 weeks before any facials, peels, microneedling, or laser treatments near the area.

Retinol and AHAs. Continue to avoid these around the treated area, with regular use, they will fade your pigment faster.

Your top-up appointment

Most treatments require a top-up session 6–8 weeks after your initial appointment. This is completely normal and is included in your treatment package, it's where we perfect and refine your results once the skin has fully settled.

Please don't judge your results until after your top-up. The healing process takes time, and the final look is always worth the wait.
